Ted Deutch plans South Florida congressional town halls

U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-West Boca, is holding town hall meetings on Wednesday, something that’s become a rarity among South Florida members of Congress.

As the tea party rose to political prominence and Obamacare was working its way through Congress, the sessions during that year’s August congressional break evolved away from members of Congress answering questions and hearing views from constituents. With protesters often ginned up by national political groups, the town hall meetings became more confrontational, with angry activists shouting at the politicians.

So members of Congress, in South Florida and across the country, replaced traditional, in-person town halls with telephone town halls, in which they spoke and answered questions in giant conference calls.

Here’s the schedule of Deutch in-person town halls on Wednesday:

West of Delray Beach: 2:15 to 3:30 p.m., Shirley Barton Weisman Delray Community Center, 7091 W. Atlantic Ave.

Deerfield Beach: 4 to 5:30 p.m., Century Village East Clubhouse Party Room, 2400 Century Blvd.

Coral Springs: 7 to 8:20 p.m. Coral Springs Charter School, 3205 N. University Drive.
