Parkland voters return Weissman to office

Voters returned veteran commissioner Mark Weissman to office Tuesday night.

Weissman, a Parkland city commissioner from 1996 to 2000 and again since 2006, is also a former state representative. He was running against political newcomer David Gobeo for District 4.

The main election issue focused on taxes.

Gobeo, an attorney, campaigned on his fresh outlook, calling Weissman a “career politician,” but Weissman, a funeral home owner, said voters preferred his experience.

“I don’t see this as a victory for me, I see this as a victory for the entire city commission that we are on the right track and we have a city that is the envy of South Florida,” Weissman said

Also, on Tuesday, voters turned down a charter amendment that would have allowed the commission to appoint somebody to an empty seat. This means vacancies will continue to be filled with candidates chosen by voters.

The seat of former City Commissioner Jared Moskowitz, who resigned to run for a successful bid to the state House, will be filled in a special election.
