Parkland Dash brings community togther for good cause

Parkland Mayor Michael Udine loves to see when members of his community get together for a good occasion. But more than anything, one that can benefit each and every participant in a healthy way. That is why he is looking forward to the Parkland Dash this Sunday, which is in conjunction with the ongoing celebrations honoring the city’s 50th anniversary.

“I always love to see the great community spirit. Our event usually draws families running together in groups,” said Udine of the event that will offer a 5K, 10K and 1-mile fun run elements. “I like to see everyone out, enjoying the day, trying to stay fit and participating in a good cause.”

The event’s proceeds are planned to help different charities, including the Relay for Life/American Cancer Society, as well as some of the local schools.

The event is scheduled to begin at Pine Trails Park (10555 Trails End) at 7 a.m., and depending on which route participants venture on, they will trek throughout the main Parkland radius.

“I just want to see everyone have fun. While some run for competitive times, most do not. They are just out there to have a good time,” added Udine, who plans on participating in the 5K run this year. “I like to mix it up a bit with different distances on my runs.”

Udine is expected to be accompanied by quite a few other members of the community and close by areas this weekend, in which participants’ running abilities vary.

“We get a good mix of intermediate, beginners and families for this event,” said Scott Davidoff, City of Parkland’s Parks and Recreation director. “A few years ago, the city wanted to put on its own event; it has continued to grow and get better each year.”

And as a community, family friendly atmosphere, Davidoff said the event’s only requirement is that all participants bring a positive attitude that day.

“It’s always good for people to get out, get some exercise and have some fun,” added Udine, who also stays fit from participating in a local runners club. “I look forward to seeing everyone out there.”
