COCONUT CREEK — Construction is expected to begin next year on a park expansion that will cost taxpayers $2.4 million.
Windmill Park, at 700 Lyons Road, will expand to include an additional basketball court, lighted concrete paths, pavilions, outdoor exercise equipment, restrooms and more parking.
The city purchased a neighboring 2-acre lot for $450,000 in December 2011.
The city plans to apply for a $200,000 state grant to help pay for the park, but improvements will happen even if the money doesn’t come through.
“We plan to go forward regardless,” said Sheila Rose, the city’s director of sustainable development. “It is a great project.”
Windmill Park was built in 1990 and now has basketball courts, volleyball courts, tennis courts, a playground, and a dog park.
The expansion could be open in 2017.
