The National Weather Service received a gust of phone calls from witnesses who saw a funnel cloud over the Everglades in northwest Broward on Monday.
“It never touched down,” meteorologist Barry Baxter said.
Several motorists reported the sighting west of the Sawgrass Expressway and some took pictures with cameras and cell phones.
“It was going down and up and down and up,” Baxter said. “From some angles it looked like it was coming right down to the ground but it wasn’t.”
It was moving north through the Everglades from west of Coral Springs to west of Boca Raton.
With variable winds, conditions were ripe for the formation of funnel clouds late on a muggy Monday afternoon but the odds decreased as the sun set, he said.
