Armed men rob dollar store; bind employees

The two men in hooded sweatshirts can be seen on surveillance video, roaming a Pembroke Park dollar store while pointing handguns at employees’ backs.

In less than seven minutes on Sept. 23, the men stole $5,000 from the safe of Family Dollar at 4100 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd. They also took cellphones and credit cards from the employees, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

“These men went into the store with a plan,” said sheriff’s spokeswoman Gina Carter. “They continually asked for the assistant manager during the robbery, and we believe they knew that was the person who had the code to get into the safe.”

None of the store’s four female employees — including the assistant manager on maternity leave who was shopping in the store — were injured, the agency said.

But witnesses told investigators one gunman told the assistant manager: “You are lying, I should shoot y’all.”

During the robbery, a gunmen told a clerk, “I’m doing this because my home-girl filled out an application and y’all didn’t hire her,” according to an incident report.

The men wore stocking masks. Once they took the money, they bound the employees’ limbs with duct tape. Two surveillance cameras were ripped from store walls, but some footage was retrieved, according to the sheriff’s office.

The suspects are believed to be involved in other retail robberies in Broward County, Carter said.
